FAQ (Thailand Amulet)
Here are some of the most common questions about Thai Amulet. The answers that we put here are the results of a general summary of the results of our research for decades. Although there are always small differences in each person perception, broadly have relatively the same understanding.
1. What is the general restrictions on using thai amulet ?
In general term, we are not allowed in doing something evil and immoral activity such as :
Scolding old people, hurting people, using amulets when engaging in sexual activities or other immoral activities. Sometimes certain Thai amulets have their specific restrictions and rules, depending on the type of Thai Amulet or who made it. However, the restrictions mentioned above are generally accepted.
2. How to put or store Thai amulet correctly?
Thai amulets can be placed in a high place or on a cupboard/drawer shelf. Don’t mix with other dirty items. Don’t put it on the floor, bathroom and wardrobe.
It would be better if it were placed on the prayer altar. It doesn’t matter if you worship the other Gods, place them on the altar table and pray sincerely.
In the bedroom, thai amulet can be stored in drawers and cabinets. It should not be placed next to the bed (if you are involved in sexual activities). Thai amulet is a sacred spiritual item and we should treat it with respect.
3. Can thai amulet lose its power or energy after some time?
Of course not, Buddhis thai amulets which are blessed with a pure heart, a high concentration of mind and good intentions are not easy to lose their energy power. In the past, thai amulets made by a temple or teacher, some of the amulets will be kept under the stupa/ground for a long time before to be used (in the future) to funding temple operational. That is why in the present time many old thai amulets are found in ancient temples which ages hundreds of years old but still have the same energy power.
However, those who have bad behavior may not feel the benefits of amulets to the fullest. In summary, an Thai amulet will lose energy not because of time, but because of the trust and behavior of the user.
4. Can thai amulet be placed below the waist or in the pants pocket?
Thai amulet that have the image of a Buddha / God / Monk must be worn above the waist. This practice is more a form of respect. Thai amulet that do not have images such as Takrut, Biagae, Loop Om, etc. can be placed in a pants pocket or below the waist (unless the item has a Buddha / God / Monk image).
Thai amulets in the form of animals and spirits can also be placed below the waist. But you have to pay attention to the character of the Thai Amulet, for example, the Kruba Krissana’s Butterfly Amulet, although in the form of an animal, this butterfly is a manifestation of Lord Shiva so it must be placed above the waist.
5. Should thai amulet be removed when we go to the toilet or a dirty place?
Of course not, thai amulet can be worn at any time, including when you go to the toilet. But wash your hands thoroughly before touching the amulet. When you want to take a shower, better to remove the amulet to avoid damage to the amulet and discomfort. Unless your situation is not possible to release amulets (for example you are in War). Treat amulets with respect and have a strong belief in the Buddha-Dhamma-Sangha, the amulet will protect you.
Here’s one of the stories when a devotee asked Luangphor Doem Wat Nong Pho (Great top 10 Monk in Thailand) – “Can we wear amulets in a dirty place like a sewerage ditch? , LP Doem answered, “What if you meet a snake that can bite you (venomous)?” The answer from a Master explained that amulets is supposed to protect us, not the other way around.
6. Is it possible to use Thai Amulet during a woman’s period or allow the amulets to be touched by people who are in her period?
Of course can, because menstruation is a natural process from humans. It’s just that the hands must be washed before touching the amulet. Treat amulets with respect and have a strong belief in the Buddha-Dhamma-Sangha, the amulet will protect you.
I saw some women don’t want to use Thai Amulet when they on period. This is a ridiculous thing. Amulets are supposed to protecting us, not to harming us. The power of amulets and blessings from the Celestial Gods will move away if we do bad things continuously, not because of this woman’s situation.
A devotee has asked His Holiness Luangphor Hong about this matter. With smilingly, LP Hong said, “aren’t we all out (born) from there?”.
7. Do you need to chant amulet before using it?
Can Yes and No. Every Buddhist is advised to read the holy verse every day. This will increase our confidence and awareness. Although there are some thai amulets which are required to recite a particular mantra (Katha). However, in general term, the following basic mantra can also be applied to all types of amulets (Buddhist Thai Amulets). Hold your amulet respectfully before going out or doing something, while saying this mantra / Katha:
“Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sam Buddhasa (3x)”
Then you can pray silently, may I be blessed today with good health and protection.
If you forget or don’t know the original mantra (Katha) from the amulet, then this basic Buddhist mantra can be used. The most important thing is the belief in our hearts and minds.
8. Does Thai Amulet need to be re-blessed by the Master (Luangphor or Ajahn)?
No need. Based on the results of our research to many senior teachers, Most concluded that the amulet that had been blessed well before did not need to be blessed again. The power in the amulets will not go decline.
Sometimes when we donate a Monk at the temple, they will read a prayer for us or sprinkled holy water, some people may ask to recite Katha (mantra/pray) to their amulets, and usually, monks will only recite a general short Katha/mantra.
However, the practice of the people to request amulets to be blessed by the Master is well too, this is to increase the belief of the people, reminding the people of the teachings or another good thing, or make them want to visit the temple, which is usually followed by donations to the temple and listening “Dhamma” from the teacher. Again, the most important thing is the belief in ourselves and our minds.
9. How to arrange the positions of thai amulets correctly in the necklace?
Thai amulets which hanged in necklaces generally place amulets with a Buddhist image in the middle position, then followed by amulets with an image of a God/Guru. For the type of spirit amulets, better to separate them to other necklaces. However, this is not a necessity, we often see people wearing many thai amulets in their necklaces, but they put a larger one in the middle to maintain balance and comfort. This is not a problem; the most important thing is attitude and confidence in your heart. If we use amulets but continue to do evil deeds, will the Gods help us?
10. Are we allowed to wear thai amulets during visiting maternity ward and funeral?
Of course, you can. Amulets are made to protect the people, not vice versa. If not, what is the point of wearing amulets? That is a belief that is still held by some Chinese descendants who still believe in the understanding of Taoism. If you feel uncomfortable, you can hold the amulet and pray silently. This will increase confidence and stabilize your heart.
But there are differences between Taoism belief and Buddhist. In fact, you wear Buddhist Amulet or Taoism talisman?
11. Why are there expensive thai amulets ? Are expensive amulets better than cheap amulets?
Expensive amulets are not better than cheap amulets. It all depends on our beliefs, karma, and actions. An amulet can be of expensive in value due to historical factors and demand factors. Some common factors that make amulet demand increasing are :
-Thai amulet made by a teacher/monk who is known to have a good reputation and high Samadhi (concentration) power.
-Thai amulet is blessed through grand ceremony by monks and teachers.
-The basic ingredients used to make Thai amulets.
-Number and types of amulets made in an event.
-Testimonial from people who wear the Buddhist thai amulets (especially if it involves the Royal family, government officials, military officials, high-rank politicians or celebrities).
Amulets can have one of the above factors or even all of them. Although the most important thing is self-confidence, if I am personally told to choose between amulet A within 2-hour blessed and amulet B which blessed through a 9-day ceremony, if it is regardless of a financial matter, then I will definitely choose amulet B. However, this depends on each individual. This is just my personal view.
12. For the type of spirit amulet, do we have to provide food & drinks every day routinely?
Generally, spirit amulet in the form of a statue (Bucha) needs to be provided with food and drink. The time of serving is varying, it can be every day, two times per week or 2 times per month.
But some people give offerings for their spirit amulets. But commonly, most people will simply ask the spirit in the amulet to eat what they eat. There is no specific method at all, all depends on self-belief, and if you feel uncomfortable, then you can ask directly to the teacher or the temple about it. But spirit amulet or what other amulets it is should make our life easier, not vice versa.
13. Can thai amulet be tested?
Thai amulets are not allowed to be tested, especially in cases that can endanger the safety of humans and animals. We often see demonstrations on thai amulet experiments, but generally under the direct supervision of the teacher and the temple. According to some teachers, we must recite a special mantra (Katha) to ask God’s permission before the amulet being tested.
In Thailand, there are often accidents that take lives or severely injured. Usually, a trial is carried out by experts, including police, military and other experts.
The way of Thai Amulet works is somewhat different from some other invulnerable magic such as those found in Malaysia or Indonesia. Thai Amulet cannot be used as a general show and amulets will only react when you are in danger.
14. Can Spirit Amulet be used together with other major amulets?
Type of Spirit Amulet advisably separated from an Amulet with the image of Buddha / God / Monk. But those are categorized as “mainstream” can be used together. “Mainstream” amulets are usually amulet spirits made by monks or temples that have a good reputation in developing Dhamma and Sangha; the amulets are generally made with good intentions and pure intentions to help the spirit. You need to observe the history of the amulet.
You must watch out the image in Thai Amulet too, for example, Kumanthong and Kumanthep. Kumanthep is considered God Level, while kumanthong is Spirit.
In Thailand, most people will separate to other necklaces or put in a bag, pants pocket or shirt pocket.
As for some of the popular mainstream spirit amulets and usually used together with other major amulets, they typically have images of Buddha or God, such as Khunpaen Prai Kuman LP Team Wat Laranhai, Phra Leela LP Hock Wat Thakam, Phra Pidta Ajahn Nuu, and others.
15. How do we know that our Thai Amulet has worked well?
There is no exact method to find out whether the amulet has worked properly or not.
If we wear amulets and we back home safely at night, has the amulet protected us from going through bad things on that day?
Some people may be more sensitive and can feel the energy of the amulet, but most of these are just a temporary feeling phenomenon. Only those who have carried out intense self-training can provide this subjective judgment.
None of Thai Amulets can provide certainty; it must be supplemented with good behavior and thoughts, pure heart, self-confidence, and understanding of karma.
That is why some people who use buddhis thai amulets can feel the benefits of the amulet — both in terms of safety, fortune, and luck. Thai amulet will work as “booster.” Wearing amulet with proper way, one will receive unlimited spiritual benefits above our logical mind.
